Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
