The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
