A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
