In the wake of a crucial victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, the reigning world champion has significantly closed the gap in the driver's standings. He now finds himself just a dozen points behind leader the British driver and leading teammate his McLaren rival, the scene is set for a nail-biting three-way season finale at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
His most recent win was not at all straightforward. Even though he delivered a flawless drive for his team, the result was significantly impacted by a controversial strategic call from the McLaren team. Opting not to pit during an early safety car period, the team presented the initiative to their rival, who pounced impeccably.
"I'm thrilled, I'm happy to go there and fight for it," the driver said. "I go in there with just good vibes. I will give everything I can but simultaneously, should I fall short, I still know that I had an incredible season."
This perspective he claims alleviates the pressure. His focus for the ultimate battle is clear: to maximize each opportunity from himself and the RB21.
The incredible part of Verstappen's late-season charge particularly notable is the margin he has recovered. After the Zandvoort round in August, he was an enormous over a century of points behind the then-leader Oscar Piastri and had publicly written off his championship hopes.
The turnaround began with substantial car developments introduced by his team at the Italian Grand Prix. Modifications to the car's floor and aerodynamic package solved persistent performance deficits, allowing Verstappen to regain confidence with the chassis once more.
Since that point, his performance has been completely dominant, achieving five victories and several top-three finishes. He made sure to highlight the collective effort behind this resurgence.
"We've won races where maybe the odds were against us, by making the optimal strategy as a team," he explained. "The partnership with my race engineer and the whole team... we are deeply connected."
Ahead of the head to Abu Dhabi, the mathematics is perfectly defined.
The pressure now shifts on the papaya-colored cars, who have watched a comfortable advantage evaporate due to costly errors, including a double disqualification in Las Vegas. From his perspective, being the hunter brings a sense of fearlessness, transforming the last event into a simple opportunity to attack with zero pressure.
