The Reasons the Duke of York Has Surrendered His Official Titles – and What It Means for the Monarchy

In a statement issued by the royal household, the king's brother has declared that he will be giving up his royal titles, including the Duke of York. Here is an overview of what has been announced – and what remains unchanged.

What Has the Prince Announced?

Having already withdrawn as a working royal in 2019, Andrew has currently decided to “go a step further” and agree not to use the “title or the honours which have been granted to” him.

But he also used the statement to emphatically rejecting – as he has always done – the allegations of sexual impropriety leveled at him; even though after settling millions to settle the legal claim filed by Virginia Giuffre – a settlement in which he accepted no fault and firmly denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

Why Hasn’t He Formally Stripped of His Entire Honors?

To revoke a dukedom would take an act of parliament, and would constitute such a historic move in full view of the public – it has not occurred to a high-ranking royal in over a century – that it would likely cause more harm to the image for the royals.

The prince remains still a prince. At his birth in 1960, he became as the son of a monarch. This could only be altered if a royal decree was enacted by the reigning monarch.

He would not desire that trip to be marred by further adverse coverage about Andrew.

What Was the Reaction?

Although he stated Giuffre had been “vindicated” by the decision, Giuffre’s brother Sky Roberts has told a newspaper that Andrew’s honorary prince title ought to be removed for “true justice” to be done.

The republican advocacy organization Republic has additionally stated the move is “too little, too late”, adding: “Andrew remains accused of sexual offences and abuse of office. He should be stripped of every honor and his navy rank and should undergo a criminal investigation. Not using archaic honors is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
