When Beachgoers Fled Attack, Popular Picture Depicts Rescuer Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the iconic beach as her back yard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected cracking sounds echoing around the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

While standing on the avenue, speaking to a pair who had run up the slope in their swimwear, she became aware of someone approaching at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to escape from, and hauling that big kit and without footwear … He moved towards something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would signal you to run in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Crisis

The photograph that Ching snapped of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, police and paramedics caring for many victims.

Local Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the patrol base next to the site of the incident becoming a impromptu hospital. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, including entering the ocean to assist people needing help.

After the events, comments of appreciation flooded in. A social media message expressed thanks for the responders who showed that “compassion will always conquer evil”.

The team of lifeguards later shared a statement, noting they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care for our personnel,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the aim that it supports those impacted.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the crew rose to the occasion from the moment the incident started right into late that night.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” said a mayor.

“These individuals exhibit altruism every day in keeping our iconic beaches safe for the public, but what we witnessed on that evening should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the atrocity of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is important that we consider just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such evil.”
